Huon Hooke, February 15 2011 Sydney Morning Herald Good Living

..."To say the Pressing Mattters wines hit the ground running would be a gross understatement. Show awards for the rieslings came immediately and in this year's Tasmanian Wine Show, Pressing Matters won trophies for best riesling, best wine of show (both for the 2006 R9 riesling), best 2010 vintage wine (R139 Riesling) and most successful exhibitor. Melick's tally from the show was six gold medals, five silver and three bronze from 14 entries. Every Pressing Matters riesling has won a medal somewhere and most have won a gold or silver....."

"Tamar Ridge Estates Trophy - Best Sweet White

2008 Pressing Matters R69 Riesling

This has been a beautiful wine from the outset, winning a gold medal the the '09 Show.  In the 2010 class 15 for medium sweet whites, any variety (all were in fact riesling), 08 vintage and older, it prevailed over two other golds, 2008 Pooley Late Harvest Riesling and its younger brother (2009 Pressing Matters R69 Riesling). Its luscious fruit has gained in depth over the past year, and it was this that earnt it top spot in class 15.  However, it then had to confront the top gold medal in class 16 (Pressing Matters R139 Riesling, with 139 grammes of residual sugar) and in a split vote R69 did defeat the sweeter wine. 95 points; drink to 2014; 9.1% alc/vol; screwcap; $29."

"Tamar Valley Wine Route Trophy - Best 2009 Vintage Wine

2009 Pressing Matters R69 Riesling

Trophies in wine shows often work in convoluted ways.  While the 2009 R69 had been beaten by its older brother in the medium sweet class, there were no other gold medal from 2009 in either class 15 or 16.  So it became the contender for best 2009, and it prevailed over Moores Hill Estate Riesling, which was in fact the only other contender, because other than dry rieslings, there were no '09 gold medals in the white wine classes.  Bright straw-green;eerily similar to the '08 R69 when it was 12 months old.  It has excellent balance, the intensely sweet lime juice flavours balanced by lingering acidity that ultimately leaves the mouth fresh, inviting the next sip. 95 points; drink to 2019; 10.5% alc/vol; screwcap;$29"

"2008 Pressing Matters R69...medium sweet; this wine smells and drinks like a first-class German spatlaese at less than half the price.  It is a harmonious and balanced wine without harsh acid or cloying sweetness. The overall impression is one of sweet honeysuckle underpinned with minerals.  Pressing Matters Rieslings at all grades of sweetness are show stoppers."

The Courier Mail - Three Tasmanian vineyards that are worth investigating - Friday, May 08, 2009

Ken Gargett December 30, 2008

"The first is Pressing Matters, a small winery from the Coal River region in the south. It makes tiny quantities of pinot noir and riesling, through Winemaking Tasmania, a contract operation headed by Julian Alcorso, who has a long history with top Tasmanian wines. The pinots were stunning, especially the elegant, silken 2006 – great value at $39. It was, however, the rieslings that really captured my attention.

Owner Greg Melick is Tasmania's most senior barrister, holds a high rank in the Australian Army Reserve, and reputedly has a magnificent cellar of Burgundian wines."

"Pressing Matters, a recent arrival, owned by senior counsel and fine wine devotee Greg Mellick, won golds for its 2008 R69 Riesling and 2008 R139 Riesling, the latter winning trophies for best sweet wine and best 2008 vintage wine. (R stands for residual sugar, the numbers corresponding to the number of grams of that sugar in the wine.) "

"Now Greg Melick has gone a step further and is producing four Rieslings from the 3ha planted to the variety at his Pressing Matters Vineyard at Tea Tree in the Coal River Valley, each one labelled according to its level of residual sugar.  They are the bone dry R (for riesling) 0, R9 (9 grams residual), R59 and R139, all from fully ripened and flavoured fruit with their high acid levels retained and alcohol levels between 8 and 10 percent.  They are due for release later this year."
